If you are thinking about installing a swimming pool in your home, you will have to make many decisions. Some of the questions that you need to answer are what kind of swimming spa would you want? What will be the pool's main function? Will kids be using it? How much space do you have?

To make your life easier, here are some options for pools that will help you narrow in on your decision.

Play Pools

This is the perfect spa for children and teenagers since the spa is around 5 feet deep. The main purpose of these pools is to play water sports such as volleyball or just sit by the pool and relax.

Freeform Pools

These pools are built in a lagoon style and are also referred to as naturalistic pools. They usually give as oasis feel as they are built that way and have rock features. These kinds of concrete pools are popular among people looking for something different for their homes when it comes to swimming pools.

Geometric Pools

These are the classic spa shapes that you are used to seeing. They have straight lines and the typical rectangular shape. Most people are moving away from these types of pools because there are many other types that are more more exciting and less formal pools available in the market.

Spool

The word 'spool' comes from combining the words 'pool' and 'spa' together. These are just extended versions of spas and people with smaller spaces can benefit from them. However, they may cost more than other types of pools.

Negative Edge Pools

These are now increasing in popularity as they look neat and rather chic. They are built by experts and are built in a way that displays the spa extending all the way out to the horizon. Do not compromise on the specialist you hire to build these pools. This is because expertise and skill are important factors in the construction process.

Lap Pools

These pools are longer and narrows since they are commonly over 50 feet. As the name suggests, these pools are built specifically for doing laps and are great for those who indulge in serious swimming. Athletes and people interested in swimming as a sport should consider these. Also, they provide a great way for exercising.

So the next time you're looking for a great source of entertainment and exercise within your home, check out the various possibilities of pools available.

When you think of renovating your concrete swimming pool, you need to think about a lot of things. How well you handle your renovation process, will determine how much fun you can continue to have in your concrete pool, and for how long.

Here are some points you should keep in mind regarding renovation of concrete swimming pools.

Identifying the Need for Renovation

Getting an unnecessary renovation can cost dearly. Delaying the renovation can cost you not only in terms of money, but health & safety as well. Look for the following signs that show the right time for renovation:

• Stains in the concrete pool

• Tiling visibly old

• Worn out deck

• Equipment depreciated too much

When you see some of these issues, know that its renovation time.

Consider a New Look

The renovation of concrete swimming pools is the perfect time to consider improving the look of your backyard. When you are inviting the best concrete pool renovation crew to work on your pool, remember it's an opportunity to get a new look. Consider the landscaping, pool & deck and how the renovators can make it better than before.

Research the Renovation Experts

How good you renovation goes will be determined by how good the contractor is. The ideal renovation contractor should:

• Give references and recommendations

• Be insured and licensed

• Have a significant experience

• Be attentive to your needs

Go 3D

Use 3D software to see how your concrete pool will look like after the renovation. Your renovation expert should have the ability to show you the new look in 3D.

Jazz Up or Just Renovate? Be Clear.

You should be crystal clear about your requirements and objectives before you hire concrete pool renovator. You can just go for a simple renovation, changing what needs changing, and leave it at that. Or you could jazz up your pool with new things like mosaic and LED lighting. To get the best deal, give proper thought what you want from your renovation. Rethinking requirements during the renovation of concrete swimming pools or having buyer's remorse later can be upsetting.

Legal Issues

Bear in mind that codes and regulations come into play with things like recovering your old deck. There may be limits on the size of the new deck you have envisioned. Clear such issues before renovation starts. Furthermore, ensure that the renovation contractor has, or can get, the appropriate permits.Care should be taken in each and every step.

Watchdog Error on Sundance Spas – Four Dashes

You went out to your Sundance Spa and you see that it's not working and the display panel shows “- – – -“. This is the Watchdog error. What does that mean? What do you do now? I have some answers to help you on your way! Most of the time, you Are going to…

You went out to your Sundance Spa and you see that it's not working and the display panel shows “- – – -“. This is the Watchdog error. What does that mean? What do you do now? I have some answers to help you on your way!

Most of the time, you Are going to need to call a service technician. BEFORE you do that, though, the best thing to do is shut off all power to your hot tub and give it at least 15 minutes for everything to reset. Go do that now, if you're having this problem, then read on! (No, really. Go disconnect the power to your spa!)

Alright. What causes the Watchdog error? MOST of the time, this is caused by a faulty temp sensor or flow switch. Occidentally, it is a circuit board issue. On very rare occasions it could have been the control panel or a transformer. It could also just be a power spike, which is why we want to give it a chance to reset before you call anyone out to work on it. Fairly often, if you shut it off for 30 minutes, completely disconnected from power, and then connect it again – you'll see the error go away.

If it is the temp sensor or the flow switch, it can be fairly quick and inexpensive to replace, and those are the most common problems. A Sundance Certified Technician will not have any problem replacing the faulty parts and getting you quickly back to enjoying your hot tub. When they come out, they will test different jumpers on your circuit panel to diagnose which component of your spa needs replaced.

Now that you know more about the Watchdog Error on Sundance Spas, go ahead and try powering your spa on again (as long as it's been at least 15 minutes) and see how it does! If it's working like normal again, do not worry about it. If it goes into Watchdog again, call your local service tech-and do not worry about it!

What can you do to help keep your spa from having errors like this? It is always a great idea to keep your water balanced and to clean your tub every 4-5 months. When I say balanced, you MUST watch your PH levels and your calcium hardness levels. If your water is too hard, it can cause buildup in the lines and on things like your flow switch. PH levels that are not balanced can cause corrosion of your tubs components. Make sure when you drain and refill your tub that you use a true spa cleaning solution and let the jets run for 20-30 minutes, if not longer, before draining. A lot of buildup can hide in your lines, and it can take time to loosen and be removed.

There are certain steps to pool maintenance that do not needlessly have to be taken care of every day, but should not be put off for too long. Here are some weekly pool maintenance steps:

Backwash the filter. Your filter should be cleaned out according to the filter's gauge, but many people let checking the gauge slip their mind. Making it part of your weekly routine to check the gauge and backwash if needed can help prevent putting it off for too long.

Test and evaluate the water chemistry. Pool water should ideally be checked every day, but every week, evaluate what your chemical situation is. Are the seasons about to change? Is the pool cover situation going to change? Has it been a long time since it has rained? Every week, think about what long term changes you should be making to your water chemistry.

Vacuum and / or brush the sides and bottom of the pool. Even the best pool equipment can not keep the pool completely free of scum and algae. Clean it off every once in a while so so it does not build up too much.

Adjust chemicals that are not part of your everyday routine. You should adjust your chlorine and other major chemicals a few times a week, but other chemicals do not have to be messed with as often. This could be chemicals like algaecide and pool shimmer.

Clean the area around the pool. Once a week, sweep the deck and the rest of the area around the pool. If there is a debris around the pool, it will not be long before it makes its way into the pool. Not to mention, the pool area is much more enjoyable when it is looking its best.

Clean out the pool with a leaf net. This will vary depending on what time of year it is, how many trees are around your pool, and whether or not you are using a pool cover. However, this needs to be done at least once a week unless there's little to none debris and you are using a cover. If you put off sweeping out the surface, the debris could fall to the bottom of the pool and settle. If you are lazy about this step, make sure you have a great pool cleaner that can handle this level of cleaning.

Adjust water levels. If the water level is too low, your skimmer will suck in air, which can damage your equipment. If water level is too high, then the skimmer is unable to pull debris from the surface of your pool.

Lap Pools – Staying Fit With Lap Pools

When it comes to fitness equipment, most people think that they have seen it all. But when you show them the different kinds of lap pools that are available, they are surprised at what they see. There are a wide variety of exercise pools that you can build to help you stay fit and stay in shape. If you want something indoor and a little more personal, then try a Riverpool. That is a small pool that generates a current that you swim against. The current is so strong that you could swim against it for hours and never move from that single spot. But you would be going through all of the motors of swimming and accelerating all of the energy you would endeavor to go swimming. So it allows you to get a full swimming workout in a very small and confined space.

One of the more interesting varieties of lap pools is the collapsible ones that can be set up in any yard or any small space. A pool like this is designed to allow you to do laps back and forth to get the exercise that you would normally get from swimming laps. However, the pool is designed in such a way that it is only wide enough to allow lap swimming. The portable version is sometimes referred to as a half lap, which means that it is the proper width for doing laps but it is half the length. It can still be a valuable exercise tool for people who have small yards but want to enjoy the benefits of a vivid swim.

The fixed lap pools and Riverpool units can be quite elaborate. You can find lap units that are the length of Olympic swimming pools but only a few lanes wide. The advantage to these kinds of units is that they can be installed inside a health club or gym without having to build a large and new structure on the property. The river spa versions can be placed in any equipment room and can be used as a water treadmill. It is all unique exercise equipment designed to keep you fit.

The next time you hear someone talk about lap pools, you will now know exactly what they are talking about. These pools are specifically designed for doing laps and not for recreational swimming. They can help expand what kinds of exercises your health club can offer and give you the chance to swim your way to good health.

What to Look for in a New Hot Tub or Spa

When you're looking for your first hot tub, the challenge can be daunting. When you're looking for your first hot tub, the challenge can be daunting. It's hard to tell the difference between quality by just looking at them sometimes, and every hot tub company is going to tell you that their spa is the best choice. When there are flashing lights, tons of jets, and splashing waterfalls facing you, how do you know what is important and what is just … bling?

Fountains and lights with class

First, WHY do you want a hot tub, and HOW do you intend to use it? Most of us think of hot water and jets first. Next, comfortable seats, relaxing alone after a long day, spending time with loved ones, or having great conversations with friends. This is a great place to start!

1. Hot Water. You want the best, most reliable heater on the market. Inexpensive tubs have inexpensive heaters. Makes sense, does not it? Sundance installs Titanium Core heaters in their spas. They last a long time, they are very corrosion resistant, and they have low energy use thanks to actually coming right in contact with the water and heating directly. Ask questions about what kind of heater is in the tub, what it is made out of, and how long the warranty is!

2. Jets! It's easy to think more is better when it comes to jets, but that is not true! Better jets are better. Think of it this way: would you rather have an hour long massage from someone who has no idea what they are doing, or a 30 minute massage from a professional who knows all the right techniques? Same idea! On inexpensive spas, and even some expensive ones, you're looking at jets with bearings (that will wear down and fall out), and you're looking at jets that are not actually located on your muscle groups-they are positioned randomly Egypt in pretty patterns. Sundance Spas is the only company with BEARINGLESS jets (nothing to wear down or break), and we also have positioned each jet over a large muscle group to give you the best massage possible.

3. Comfy seats! Whether you're relaxing after a long day or getting together with friends and family, you want to be comfortable! The ergonomic design of Sundance Spa's seats will keep you relaxed! They are shaped to follow the natural form of your body, and depending on the hot tub model that you choose, the seats will be arranged for an intimate setting or for a chat with friends.

Now …. now we should talk about all the things you probably DID NOT think about being important in your hot tub-and trust me, these are important!

1. Heart and Soul of your hot tub-the Filtration System. Yup, that's right! Without a great filtration system, you'll be spending more time trying to keep your tub and water clean than enjoying it. The best filters on the market are ones that install horizontally into the hot tub, and ones that have MicroClean technology-and Sundance is the only one that has them! FDA approved and NSF certified, this is the way to go. Cut down on chemical usage, have beautiful, sparkling clean water, and keep your family safe!

2. The Company you will Buy From & Get Service From. Extremely important! Check them out on the Better Business Bureau's website. Do they have service complaints? Check out any reviews you can find on Google, Angie's List, etc. Talk to friends who have hot tubs or spas. Many companies pay for great advertising and expensive flashy signs to get you in the door …. but really fall short after the purchase. You want a company that has been around for years, who has a competent sales staff that cares about you, and who has a certified team of technicians that will be able to keep you taken care of. Follow your gut instinct, and go with a company you actually * LIKE *. You'll never regret that.

How Pool Salt Water Chlorinators Affect Asthma Attacks

If you have a child who struggles with asthma, you know that everything you do is governed by their asthma. You constantly find yourself worried about what will and will not trigger an asthma attack. Parents of asthmatic children find themselves wondering if they should allow their children to swim in swimming pools.

There is some evidence that the chlorine that is commonly used to keep the pool sanitized and the water really clean could actually trigger an asthma attack. Not only do many experts feel that chlorine can trigger breathing problems in individuals who already have asthma, some experts wonder if the reason that there are so many asthmatic swimmers could be because the chlorine causes some people to develop the respiratory condition.

In the past the only way your child could enjoy a cool dip in their swimming pool was if they were willing to risk an asthma attack. The good news is that it might now be possible for your asthmatic child to enjoy swimming in your swimming pool and not have to worry that they will not be able to breathe when they get out of the pool. The answer could come in the form of pool salt water chlorinators.

What pool salt water chlorinators do is eliminate the need for you to use chemicals to keep the water in your pool clean. When you take advantage of the pool salt water chlorinators the only additive that will be in your swimming pool will be salt. Unlike the chlorine, the salt should not trigger an asthma attack the next time your child goes swimming.

Your child is not the only person who will enjoy swimming in your pool better after the pool salt water chlorinators have been added. You'll find that you also like the pool better. The chemicals you previously used have a tendency to dry out swimmers skin and hair. This will not happen when you are swimming in a pool that is treated with pool salt water chlorinators.

While the fact that you child will be able to enjoy a cool dip without having to wonder if they are going to be able to breathe or not is the best reason to make the change from pool cleaning chemicals to pool salt water chlorinators, it is not ' t the only reason.

Using pool salt water chlorinators is going to save you all kinds of money. Although you will have to add a bit of extra salt from time to time, you are not going to have to ever purchase pool cleaning supplies every again. The pool salt water chlorinators do a better job of keeping your pool water sanitized which means that there will be less wear and tear on your filtration system which will save you even more money.

Use a Salt Water Pool Chlorinator to Lower Your Risk of Cancer

One of the reasons that some people would rather drive hours to get to a beach to swim rather than dive into a swimming pool, is because they are worried about what the long term effects of the chemicals that are used to clean and maintain the ph balance of the swimming pool water. Many people have worried that the chemicals used to maintain the water could cause cancer. For years, no one really paid much attention to these allegations, however the Environmental Health Perspectives has done a study that provides evidence that the chemicals that are used to clean the swimming pool water can lead to an increased risk of your development cancer later in your life.

The good news is that avoiding a potential diagnosis of cancer does not mean that you have to board up your pool. You just have to stop using chemicals to clean the swimming pool.

Do not assume that not using the chemicals means that you are doomed to a life of murky water. It does not. If you are serious about lowering your risk of cancer, all you have to do is start using a salt water pool chlorinator instead of the chemicals that you have used in the past.

Once the salt water pool chlorinator has been installed into your swimming pool you will use the number of gallons of water that your pool holds to determine the amount of salt you should add to the swimming pool water. Once you the correct amount of salt has been added, the salt water pool chlorinator will convert the salt into which gets rid of all the algae and bacteria that is in your water. Once the swimming pool water is clean, the converters back to salt. The salt water pool chlorinator makes sure that the process keeps repeating itself so that you never have to worry about sanitizing your swimming pool ever again. The only thing you will have to occasionally do is check the salt content. Some of the salt will be lost when water is splashed out of the pool, so you so often have to add a little more.

The fact that there is no longer any need to dump all kinds of chemicals into your swimming pool water means that you will be able to dive into the water without worrying that you could be increasing the odds of you developing cancer later in your life. The more immediate benefit that comes from you making the change to a salt water pool chlorinator is that you'll notice your hair and skin do not dry out so much after you've been swimming and that the water does not sting your eyes .

Ten Reasons to Hire Professional Pool Service

Of course, hiring someone to do a job is always somewhat more expensive than doing it yourself, but in this case, the difference is often less than most imagine. The only way to really know if hiring a pool service is worth the cost in your particular situation is to get estimates. And consider the ten reasons to hire a professional pool service in Irvine (Irvine was incorporated in 1971. The city of Irvine has enjoyed consistent recognition as an economic, environmental and educational leader among cities across the nation.):

1. Professional swimming pool services will guarantee the work and swimming pool to function correctly.

2. Pool maintenance, while it appears simple, when you get involved either daily or burn through your time on the weekends devoted to cleaning your pool.

3. There is never enough time during the day to deal with daily life much less your pool.

4. The experience and training that your pool service has is vastly different from a one pool owner in the back yard. On average most pool guys visit over 60 swimming pools in one week and each one individually
unique.

5. Some retailers that sell pool supplies and chemicals may offer free services to get you to buy their own overpriced products that administrator to your pool at their mercy. However not every situation is fixed from the desktop of a pool supply store. The staff is trained to give answers to particular problems and most have very little to no experience in pool service save for the maintenance that they performed on the own family pool.

6. Water balance-clear water is not always balanced water. The clearest water is actually way out of water balance and is not inviting to any swimmer, their skin will itch, possibly welt up into have and bathing suits ruined. I know what most pool owners want it, is to see the bottom of the pool and no green algae.

7. Equipment- with out of balance water becomes costs repairs to equipment of filters, heaters, pumps, salt cells, and plaster.

8. For an extra fee, some pool maintenance companies will also close your pool at the end of the season for those who live cold climates and when the warmer weather returns will open the pool. Closing a pool requires is to add anti-freeze to the pipes, and then cover the pool. Opening the pool reverses the process, plus checking the circulation and filtration systems for the pool.

9. The pool service in Irvine come out on weekly bases and will come more frequently if it becomes necessary.

10. The maintenance crew will be professionals that will scrub your pool walls and steps, clean the filter and empty skimmer baskets and ensure that the equipment is working properly.

Fashion loves to hand out do's and don'ts, but swimming pool maintenance has some great tips as well! Check out these pool maintenance do's and don'ts.

Do not: Assume the pool's water chemistry is self-sustaining.
Do: Check water chemistry at least twice per week. Do not let pH get above 8.0 or alkalinity stray from the 80-140 range.

Do not: Assume that kids will not go for a dip when you are not looking.
Do: Take all the safety precautions you can. You should always supervise children when they swim, but sometimes they can try to swim without permission or fall in accidentally. Installing a pool safety cover, gate, and an alarm can help keep this from happening.

Do not: Backwash the pool filter too often, or not often enough.
Do: It's difficult to tell you exactly how often you should backwash your filter because this is dependent on what kind of pool and filter you have. Backwash the filter based on the filter gauge. Even backwashing filters too often can reduce their effectiveness.

Do not: Ignore the skimmer basket.
Do: Clean out the skimmer basket often so that you do not have circulation problems. When your skimmer basket is full of debris, your pump has to work harder to circulate water.

Do not: Add chemicals during the day.
Do: Wait until the sun has gone down. The chemicals will be more effective without the sun. The sun's UV rays reduces the effectiveness of chemicals and will leave you confused as to why you have to add so much more than the recommended amount.

Do not: Skimp on drain covers.
Do: Comply with the Pool and Spa Safety Act. This act was put into place because of the problems with children drowning because of the powerful suction of some pool drains. It is not only important for swimming pool safety but legally required to use drain covers that are up to federal standards.

Do not: Run your pumps for less than six hours, unless you have a small enough pool.
Do: It is recommended to run the pump for six to eight hours, but you should adjust according to the size of your pool. If your water is looking cloudy, try running the pump for longer. The pump is an important part of the filtration system, and if it's not running enough, your water could start looking dirty.

Last of all, the largest “Do” is to have all the right swimming pool supplies !

First of all, there are three main types of swimming pool filters:

Sand filters. These are probably the most common type of filter. Water is pumped through a bed of sand and contaminants are sorted out. After the contaminants build up, the filter must be backwashed.

Cartridge filters. This kind of filter is known for being easy to contain. It uses a typically polyester cartridge to remove particles from the water that lasts a very long time. Rather than having to constantly replace the cartridge, most cartridge filters only require that after the particles build up, you remove the cartridge and wash out the contaminants.

DE filters. Otherwise known as diatomaceous earth filters, or the fossilized residues of diatoms, these filters can remove very small particles but require a bit more maintenance. These filter use a powder made from seashells to trap pollutants and requires that new powder be added each week. The ability to remove smaller particles results in a cleaner, more sparkly swimming pool.

Pool water enters through the skimmer and the pool pump sends the water through the filter, and through one of these three methods, removes particles from the water. The clean water is returned to the pool. If the pump or filtration system gets turned off for a long period of time, the pool water will become cloudy or dirty.

The pump does not have to run all day, but it should run long enough to filter out all the water. This can take around six to eight hours. If you are having particular trouble with green or dirty water, you should run your pump for as long as it takes to become clear. The pump plays a vital role for pool circulation, which is essential for healthy pool sanitation. The pump creates enough pressure to send the water to the filter with enough force to remove particles from the water.

The difference between the skimmer and the filter is that the skimmer pulls at the surface of the pool to remove larger debris while the filter separates water from the smaller ones. Filters vital to a healthy pool, so make check out a pool supply store for the right filters for your pool.

There are a few reasons why a pool turns green. You could have an unbalanced water chemistry. You may not be adding enough chlorine or have a more advanced chemical problem. You also might not be running the filter long enough or it could be an algae problem.

Your next step depends on the level of debris in the pool. If the water is both green and is either so murky that you can not see the bottom or you can see larger debris, you should clean it out with a leaf net. Removing these debris with a net prevents them from clogging your skimmer or filter. If you have an overwhelming amount of algae in the pool, you may want to manually scrub the sides and bottom or consider using an algaecide so that things will get cleared up more quickly. Whether or not you use a vacuum or automatic cleaner to get rid of the algae depends on the amount of algae and whether or not the appliance is equipped to handle it.

You may be wondering why the first step is not to drain the pool. That would make things easier, right? Well, this should only be done on above-ground pools. When in-ground pools are drained, they may collapse. There is a balance between the pressure of the surrounding ground and the water inside of the pool, and draining it can upset this balance. Clearing an above ground pool is much simpler-drain it, clean it, and refill it.

Next, you will want to check the water chemistry. If your alkalinity or pH is outside the suggested levels, which, if the pool is green, this is likely to be the case, you need to adjust them so that they are correct.

Then you need to shock the pool, or, in other words, super chlorinate it. The amount depends on the size of your pool. Follow directions for the amount recommended for the size of your pool. However, you may need to keep adding it until it looks like it is getting the job done.

The last step is to run the filter twenty-four hours a day until the pool is clear. Considering the hard work it is doing, the filter will most likely get clogged a few times a day and need to get backwashed.

If you are still having problems with a green pool, you may want to consult a professional. You may have a pool filter problem or advanced chemical problem. Make sure you have all the necessary pool and spa supplies to get the job done. Do not get cooked up in a green pool problem when it's time to open pools back up in the spring!
